Our Fridays

TGIF again!

I can't believe it's already been a week -- this week has been spring break for us, which really means nothing to a mother of preschoolers, who hardly need a break from school.  But we've made the most of it, and have had an enjoyable week, if I do say so myself.

On typical Fridays, Sydney and Lorelei do not have school, and we try our darndest to get to the gym for a 9:30 a.m. class that I love.  I've learned that I have to plan to leave the house by 8:45 a.m., which usually guarantees we're out the door by 9:05 a.m., and therefore on time to the gym.  Last week I did not make it to the class on time (and did a wimpy treadmill workout instead), but today we did!

On Fridays Sydney has ballet at 2:00 p.m., so we usually head straight home after the gym, so that we have plenty of time to eat lunch and put Lorelei and Ford down for an early-ish nap.  Sydney watches TV, gets dressed for dance, and I straighten up the house/wash dishes until 1:30 p.m., which is when I snatch Lorelei and Ford out of their beds and deposit them in their carseats, still wondering where on earth they are and what's going on, so that we can make it to ballet on time.  It's super fun.

Today there is no ballet, due to spring break.  So after the gym we stopped by Old Navy, sans stroller, (a rookie mistake!  will she never learn?!), then to library so that I could pick up five books I had on hold that will surely need to be returned before I have a chance to read them.  I fed the kids a hefty snack before leaving the gym, so all should have been well at Old Navy, until Lorelei bumped her head on a metal rack and couldn't recover after that.  And it rubbed off on Sydney.  So for the next hour, I listened to nonstop whining/sobbing and complaining, including these gems:

Sydney: "I wish I didn't have a sister or brother!"
Lorelei: "I wish I didn't have a sister or brother!"
Bubby: ***suck, suck, suck*** (on pacifier, just like Maggie Simpson)
Lorelei: "I want a new toy!" (I can only imagine what the patrons of Old Navy were thinking while she was yelling/sobbing this; I really had to grit my teeth at this point!)
Sydney: "I don't want to grow out (outgrow) my bike!"
Lorelei: "I want to take my bike to Heaven!"
Lorelei: "I want to stay at our house forever!"
Lorelei: "I can't stop crying!"
Lorelei: "I want to go to nap!" (that's how she always says it: "I want to go to nap")

Lorelei was obviously having the hardest time.  But you know what?  As soon as we arrived home, Sydney and Bubby went straight to the table for a quick, quiet lunch, while Lorelei politely declined lunch and played silently with some Easter paraphernalia on the living room rug.  Bubby joined her when he was done eating, and they played quietly together and it was all very surreal, like a Johnson & Johnson commercial or something.

Anyway.

On typical Fridays, after dance is over, we head home and I am ready to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the day/weekend.  Right now, on an atypical, spring-break Friday, I put all three kids down for naps and am relishing the quiet.  I have no plans to pick up the messy house, and just want to read my book and drink some coffee after I finish typing out this blog post.

By the way, pizza is usually what's for dinner on Fridays.  Can you blame me?

TGIF!
